Esto viene un poco tarde, sólo para aclarar de todos modos. Así es como puedes crear un observable simple en caso de que quieras imitar tu propia promesa. Tú lo haces

suscribirse a ella es muy fácil

también puede convertirlo en una promesa usando toPromise() or fromPromise(observable) operador y así sucesivamente.

Estoy tratando de evaluar Angular 2 y estoy teniendo problemas con los observables.

Para esto puedes usar BehaviorSubject

Una de las variantes de Temas es el BehaviorSubject, que tiene una noción de "el valor actual". Almacena el último valor emitido a sus consumidores, y cada vez que un nuevo Observer se suscribe, recibirá de inmediato el "valor actual" de BehaviorSubject. El comportamiento del sujeto siempre devuelve los últimos datos. Para mas info
