¿Por qué no pude construir sqlite?
¿Tiene algo que ver con readline o _tkinter, o alguna otra cosa?

Tuve exactamente el mismo problema que el póster original, y el parche lo resolvió.
Para aplicar el parche , desde la terminal en su directorio python 2.7.3:
