Me gustaría hacer un ícono de notificación en la barra de acciones dentro del número de notificaciones.

Por ejemplo ( Google Adsence ):

Encontré esta respuesta en stackoverflow, pero no responde completamente a mi pregunta porque en este caso solo es el número y no un ícono con un número: icono de notificación de barra de acción con recuento

Después de probar casi todos los recursos en SO, recurrí a los blogs; exitosamente. Quiero compartir lo que funcionó para mí (Api> = 13).

Comencemos con la forma en que se usa en el código:
