Esto resultó ser un problema de permiso para mí. Como esto estaba en una máquina de desarrollo donde los permisos no están bloqueados, pude solucionarlo con bastante facilidad:

sudo chmod -R 775 /usr/local/mysql/data

... si eso te lo resuelve, entonces genial. Pero si el problema está en una máquina de producción, es posible que desee investigar los permisos un poco más a fondo que mi solución.

sudo chown mysql.mysql -R /usr/local/mysql/data
